UN mission in Iraq extension of mandate - S/RES/2001

S/RES/2001 addresses issues surrounding the UN mission in Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has its mandate renewed through the resolution that also congratulates the current efforts that have been made by them. The resolution reinforces the efforts being taken by the mission on the ground while also expressing the importance of the stability and security, independence and territorial integrity of the country. In this regard, there very little novelty in the resolution other than the extension of the mandate and requirement for reviews and reports.



Preamble

The resolution initiates by recalling all relevant resolutions on Iraq, reaffirms the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Iraq while emphasizing the importance of stability and security in the country. It moves on to encourages the Government of Iraq to continue strengthening democracy and the rule of law as well as respect for human rights in the country, it also welcomes the improvements in the security situation achieved through concerted political and security efforts. It also underscores the importance of all communities in Iraq to participate and engage in the political process and dialogue, it also points to the importance of UNAMI to strengthen democratic institutions.

The resolution continues by urging the local government to promote and protect human rights, especially the protection of human rights of women and expresses the importance of addressing humanitarian issues in Iraq. In this regard, it underscores the importance to continue to take all feasible steps to develop modalities to ensure the protection of internally displaced persons and it also urges all concerned to allow full unimpeded access by humanitarian personnel to all people in need of assistance. It also welcomes the important progress Iraq has made towards regaining the international standing of the country and also expresses deep gratitude to all the UN staff in Iraq.

Operative Clauses

The resolution extends the mandate of UNAMI for a period of twelve months while maintaining their mandate the same one as stipulated through S/RES/1936 (2010) through suggestion of the Special Representative’s letter. The resolution also recognizes that the security of the UN personnel on the ground is essential and expresses its gratitude towards country that are contributing troops. The document also expresses its intention to review the mandate of the mission within twelve months or sooner and it also requests the Secretary-General to report to the Council every four months on the progress being made towards the accomplishment of the mission. It ends deciding to remain seized of the matter.
