No More Security Need for the Special Court for Sierra Leone - S/RES/1971 (2011)


S/RES/1971 is a resolution completely focused on altering the needs and requirements for action take became outdated or unnecessary in the changing international context. The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) was providing security services for the Special Court for Sierra Leone, but they are deemed not required any more by the authorities that command the efforts in the area.



Preamble

The document address its previous resolutions and statements by its President related to the situations in Liberia and Sierra Leone and welcoming a letter from the Secretary-General. It expresses appreciation for the contribution of UNMIL military personnel to the provision of security for the Special Court for Sierra Leone. It also notes that it was stated by the Special Court that the military guard will no longer be required beyond February 2011. The resolution acts under Chapter VII of the Charter.

Operative Clauses

The resolution decides to discontinue the authorization grant to UNMIL that it provide security for the Special Court for Sierra Leone and effectively withdraw its personnel from the area. It also discontinues the authorization of the mission to evacuate officials in the event of security crisis. It also looks forward to the successful provision of security for the Court and requests that the evacuation arrangement provisions be integrated into the peacebuilding effort of the UN in Sierra Leone.
